What is Pix4D Matic?

Pix4D Matic is a Pix4D product optimised for accurate and fast photogrammetric processing for large scale, corridor and terrestrial projects. It is designed to handle and process thousands of images with ease while maintaining survey-grade accuracy.

What is the difference between Pix4D Matic and Pix4D Mapper?
Pix4D Matic, similar to Pix4D Mapper, is a product optimised for accurate and photogrammetric processing for aerial and terrestrial projects.
Pix4D Matic is ideal for corridors and datasets with more than 5000 images with standard RGB camera resolutions such as 12MP, 21MP, 42MP and has no limit on the size of images. Furthermore, Pix4D Matic fully supports the terrestrial Pix4D Catch workflow with LiDAR and RGB images processing, as well as a fusion of both point clouds. Pix4D Matic is
PIX4D Mapper calibration methods: Standard, Accurate Geolocation and Orientation, Alternative
Pix4D Matic calibration pipelines: Standard, Scalable standard, Trusted location and orientation, Low texture planar

Test benchmark PIX4Dmatic vs PIX4Dmapper
In the following sections, we are comparing the PIX4Dmatic Large scale and corridor calibration template with the PIX4Dmapper 3D Maps template.
Calibration and densification steps:
The calibrate step and densify steps are faster in PIX4Dmatic compared to PIX4Dmapper.
Calibration and Densification

DSM and Orthomosaic steps:
PIX4Dmatic generated a DSM 82% faster than PIX4Dmapper, and the orthomosaic generation was successful even for large projects.
Matic vs Mapper DSM and Ortho

Total processing time:
PIX4Dmatic processed a dataset with 5294 images almost 70% faster than PIX4Dmapper.

Which operating systems are supported by Pix4D Matic?
Windows 10/11, MacOS 12/13 or higher.

Can Pix4D Matic be used with no internet connection?
No, to use Pix4D Matic an internet connection is required.

How many computers can be bound to the same account?
Each Pix4D Matic license is paired with a Pix4D account. It can run on one computer at a time, but the license is floating and can be used on any computer.

Does Pix4D Matic run on the cloud or locally?
Pix4D Matic is a desktop-only application that runs locally on Windows or macOS. The results can be uploaded to PIX4Dcloud in order to be easily shared.

What are the inputs and outputs of Pix4D Matic?
The main Pix4D Matic inputs are images and ground control points (GCPs). Once processed, it is possible to export dense point clouds, 3D Textured Mesh, DSM, and orthomosaic. It is also possible to import processed Pix4D Matic projects into Pix4D Survey to:
Vectorise the project.
Use the Terrain filter, Grid of points and TIN.
Calculate volumes.

What is the highest number of images that can be processed with Pix4D Matic?
The highest number of images that can be processed with Pix4D Matic will depend on the processing hardware. Theoretically, the algorithms will scale to any number of images. In practice, Pix4D were able to run datasets of 10,000+ images on the Pix4D Matic Recommended Hardware without issues, which shows there is more potential.

What cameras are supported by Pix4D Matic?
Compatible with any RGB camera with basic EXIF/XMP tags. There is no sensor size restriction and it is possible to use large frame sensors.
Multispectral and thermal cameras are not compatible with the Pix4D Matic software at the moment.

Will Pix4D Matic support my RTK/PPK workflow?
Yes, RTK/PPK workflow is fully supported in Pix4D Matic. Accurate image geolocation and orientation values can be written directly in the EXIF of images or imported in a separate .csv or .txt file.

How can I generate a DTM and volumes in Pix4D Matic?
It is not possible to generate a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and compute volumes directly in Pix4D Matic.
However, you can simply open any Pix4D Matic project in PIX4Dsurvey and use the generated point cloud for further analysis and feature extraction. PIX4Dsurvey can be used to generate a DTM and calculate volumes.

Can terrestrial images be processed with Pix4D Matic?
Yes, terrestrial and oblique imagery are supported in Pix4D Matic. Furthermore, there is a dedicated workflow for terrestrial acquisition with an application for 3D scanning named PIX4D Catch running on both iOS and Android. Both RGB images and LiDAR of mobile and tablet devices can be used for an optimal modelling experience.

What coordinate systems are supported by Pix4D Matic?
Pix4D Matic uses the latest coordinate system libraries in order to make sure the latest parameters are used.
By default, the input coordinate system is set to WGS 84 geographic coordinate system. If no GCPs are used, the results will be in the corresponding UTM zone.
It is however possible to select a different input coordinate system by either writing specific xmp tags into the metadata of images or by using the Import image geolocations and orientations feature.
The coordinate system of the project and Tie points can be changed in the Tie points dialog.
Pix4D Matic also includes support for horizontal grid corrections and several geoid models.

Does Pix4D Matic support geoid models?
Yes, Pix4D Matic supports global geoids (EGM84, EGM96, and EGM2008) and local geoids, for example, GEOID12B in the US and OSGM15 in the UK.
For local geoids that are not included in the Pix4D Matic database, it is possible to specify the Geoid height value to convert between ellipsoidal and orthometric heights.
